Course
Video Game Development History
A history and explorations course on how video games were built, how the medium changed, and why certain design eras mattered.
This course
- Focus: major eras of video game development, platforms, tools, and design shifts
- Built as a Game Dev 1 history explorations track
- Inspired in part by Utah game development standards
- Weekly live class: about 60 to 90 minutes
What families should know
- This course centers on history, analysis, and exploration rather than full-scale game programming
- Students may compare genres, mechanics, hardware limits, and development approaches across time
- No prior coding or game design experience is required unless a future session says otherwise
- It pairs naturally with later software, programming, or interactive media coursework
